SUMMARY:Listening Party: Everything Pepper! All Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
DESCRIPTION:Join the Audio Engineering Society for a relaxing Sunday afternoon of everything Pepper. \nMichael Romanowski at Coast Mastering will guide us through different versions of the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album\, from original mono\, through stereo and on to surround. We’ll listen\, compare and discuss material from earlier versions through the 50th anniversary edition\, which includes a new stereo remix of the album\, created using modern and vintage technology which retains some of the idiosyncrasies that were unique to the original mono version of Sgt. Pepper’s. Producer Giles Martin used first-generation tapes\, rather than subsequent mixdowns\, resulting in a more clear and spacious sound than the original album. There will also be some alternative mixes and previously unreleased session tapes. \nThis event runs a little longer than usual\, so you will have the opportunity to listen\, compare and discuss what makes a historical album. For this listening party\, Coast Mastering will provide all of the included media. \nSpace is limited\, so be sure to sign up. There will be refreshments throughout the afternoon.

SUMMARY:Sonic Talespinning in “Ears Hear Now”
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe many storytelling shows currently in circulation center on narrated stories\, supported and enhanced by music\, with occasional ambiences for atmosphere and a few sound effects to illustrate particular points. Some other media\, notably sound for film and video games\, take a more intense and nuanced approach to storytelling with sound\, in which music and sound design are often active storytelling partners. \nAES SF Speaker Larry the O\nEars Hear Now is an audio-only storytelling show taking this idea a step further by making composition and production of the primary elements (dialogue\, music\, effects\, or DME) a simultaneous and highly interactive process\, and applying musical techniques across the elements\, so that D\, M\, and E exist and flow in musical relationships with each other. The result is stories told with rich soundtracks that add layers of imagery and meaning to the tale\, revealing ever more with repeated listening. \nLarry the O\, the creator of EHN\, will look at the conception and production of “The Incident\,” a fully scored\, 33-minute story just completed as the second episode of Ears Hear Now\, from several viewpoints. The O will discuss how the show was composed to achieve its emotional objectives\, as well as look at the modified audio post systems he evolved to support the unusual and extremely fluid creation process from a practical production standpoint.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special presentation on spatial audio with Envelop\, in their recently completed San Francisco immersive audio space\, Envelop SF. The creative team from Envelop will discuss the art and technology of immersive audio\, building their new permanent venue and Envelop’s free open source software. We’ll hear examples of music and sound design that were created in immersive as well as samples upmixed. \nEnvelop is a non-profit organization that amplifies the powerful social and emotional benefits of music through spatial audio technology and shared public listening. Through Envelop’s immersive listening spaces\, powered by their open source spatial audio production software\, Envelop for Live\, they host a diversity of events ranging from spatial music performances\, listening events\, wellness and 3D audio education. For the prior 24 years\, David Maclaughlin served as the Executive Director of Audio Engineering at Husson College’s New England School of Communications in Bangor\, Maine. While at Nescom he built a small audio program into the school’s largest academic program. Along the way he created one of the first Bachelor Degree programs in Live Sound to complement the Studio Recording and Post Production Programs. He is a full member of the Audio Engineering Society\, and a member of SBE and has produced and engineered numerous commercial recording projects for well-known artists\, in the U.S. and Canada. Recently he directed the founding of the first Southern Florida chapter of the AES. Michael started his audio career as a musician and live sound engineer in Nashville\, where he quickly progressed to recording and mixing pop\, rock and alternative acts. DESCRIPTION:Microphone Array for Recording Music in Surround-Sound with Height Channels\nIn the past few years\, sound recordings with spatial audio have moved from the realm of theoretical research to the actuality of physical and digital releases in the market. At present\, three Blu-Ray disc formats utilize a traditional 5.1 surround-sound recording\, with an added 4-channel layer of height channels. David Bowles will discuss how to capture vertical localization effectively within this release format\, utilizing existing research on hearing localization and techniques learned in the field. The proposed microphone array has time-of-arrival differences between all microphones\, yet mixes down to 5.1 and stereo without excessive comb-filtering or other artifacts. \nThis is also the annual meeting of the San Francisco section\, with election results for the new year. \nSchedule\n7:00 pm Light refreshments & mixer\n7:30 pm Lecture begins \nSeating is limited\, reservations required\, click here to book your seat. \n \nSpeaker Bio\nDavid v.R Bowles formed Swineshead Productions\, LLC as a classical recording production company in 1995. Other Bowles-produced and engineered releases have been named “Record of the Month – Editor’s Choice” from Gramophone Magazine\, MusicWeb International and Opera News; “Record of the Year” from the New York Times (three times)\, the New Yorker\, American Record Guide\, Miami Clásica and Classical Candour. Several of these are available as high-resolution paid downloads from Naxos. \nIn collaboration with New York University’s Music Technology programme at Steinhardt School of Music\, Mr. Bowles is pursuing research in height channel recording. He has given a paper on his “Bowles array”(a height channel microphone technique) at AES conventions in New York and São Paulo\, both followed by 9.1 channel playbacks. \nAs an educator\, Mr. Bowles is a guest lecturer for Tonmeister programmes at New York University (Steinhardt School of Music)\, the Royal Danish Academy of Music\, the Peabody Recording Arts and Sciences (John Hopkins University) and the Banff Centre. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our June 22 meeting with Mark Willsher\, at the new Fantasy Film Center\, in Berkeley.  Seating is limited\, reservations required\, book your tickets here using the password Film6 \nThe Program\nUsing examples from middle-earth and small local productions\, Mark will discuss practical considerations for getting an orchestral score recorded and delivered in today’s world of instant turnarounds and rarely “locked” picture – offering insight gained from his broad experiences as both a music editor and scoring mixer. \nThe Theatre\nThis will be our first visit to the newly revived Fantasy Film Center. Over 200 films\, including Academy Award-winners Amadeus\, The English Patient & The Right Stuff\, were mixed on that stage since the 1981 opening. The room was conceived by Jeff Cooper\, one of the worlds most sought-after screening room designers. Studio director Jeffrey Wood says\, “This theatre was constructed like a musical instrument. The clarity and musicality of the room is extremely beautiful and non-fatiguing for precision mixing.” \nThe new renovation was overseen by Jim Austin\, along with Meyer Sound and Avid\, and features an Avid S6\, Meyers Acherons and HMS12s\, as well as connecting the theatre to the large reverb and chamber collection in the studios. It also has ISDN connection for any additional post or listening. \nSpeaker Bio\nMark Willsher is a San Francisco-based audio engineer with a diverse background in film scoring\, record production\, and software development. \nKnown for his work with Howard Shore and Peter Jackson on the scores for The Two Towers\, The Return of the King\, and The Hobbit Trilogy\, Mark’s film work has taken him to some of the world’s finest audio facilities around the world. DESCRIPTION:The San Francisco Audio Engineering Society section is sponsoring two workshops on audio production at the Eastlake Music Festival on Saturday\, May 28th. The Eastlake Music Festival is a not-for-profit free festival on the shore of Lake Merritt in Oakland\, open to all ages. This year’s musical line-up includes Picture Atlantic\, David Gans\, Bear Lincoln\, Sal’s Greenhouse\, David Harness\, Jamming Nachos\, Hip Hop for Change and Tumbledown House. \nNote: We’ve been offered an AES information table in the Music Maker Area at the Eastlake Music Festival on Saturday\, in downtown Oakland\, if we can get some help from our members to cover that.  If you have an hour or two to help out between noon and 6pm\, email us: tickets@aessf.org \n\nDavid Bowles\n Minimalist Miking – Authenticity or Cop-Out?\n1:00 pm-1:30 pm\nClassically-trained recording engineers confront this question often: we are taught orthodox stereo-pair only techniques\, yet these philosophies were derived with ‘traditional’ classical music in mind as long as 80 years ago! Though the result desired is different than a pop or soundtrack recording\, there are times the two approaches need to be blended. Other factors to consider are studio vs. concert hall; dry vs. wet acoustic space; large vs. small ensemble; ‘loud’ vs. ‘soft’ artists\, and finally the content of the musical composition itself. \nChristopher Scott Cooper\nEngineering Live Sound: Setup & Issues\n1:45 pm-2:30 pm\nA brief discussion of live sound setups\, the resultant issues to be aware of\, and how to resolve given issues with what you have. His recordings have been GRAMMY-nominated (Classical – Best Orchestral Performance) and won the “Classical Orchestral Album” prize (Just Plain Folks Awards). Other Bowles-produced and engineered releases have been named “Record of the Month – Editor’s Choice” from Gramophone Magazine\, MusicWeb International and Opera News; “Record of the Year” from the New York Times (three times)\, the New Yorker\, American Record Guide\, Miami Clásica and Classical Candour. Several of these are available as high-resolution paid downloads from Naxos. \nIn collaboration with New York University’s Music Technology programme at Steinhardt School of Music\, Mr. Bowles is pursuing research in height channel recording. He has given a paper on his “Bowles array”(a height channel microphone technique) at AES conventions in New York and São Paulo\, both followed by 9.1 channel playbacks. \nAs an educator\, Mr. Bowles is a guest lecturer for Tonmeister programmes at New York University (Steinhardt School of Music)\, the Royal Danish Academy of Music\, the Peabody Recording Arts and Sciences (John Hopkins University) and the Banff Centre. He was Visiting Professor of Recording Arts at Indiana University’s Jacobs School. \nMr. Bowles is a member of the AES (Audio Engineering Society)\, was on the Board of Governors\, served on convention committees\, and the committee of the San Francisco AES section. He is a member of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) Producers & Engineers Wing and SPARS (Society of Professional Audio Recording Services). \n  \n\nChristopher Scott Cooper\nIf it involves sound\, Chris has probably done it. A lifelong musician with over 30 years as an audio engineer/producer. Currently teaching live sound and studio production at Cogswell Technical College. His education in music composition\, years of touring and performing\, many hours sitting behind the desk both in studio and out on the road has provided a wealth of experience to pull from. In addition to Christopher’s live sound and recording work\, he’s done audio for games\, toys\, tv and film\, systems installs\, and is known for his trouble shooting abilities. \nTwelve years ago Christopher built Blue Seven Audio\, a high end professional recording studio tucked into a modest space that is both intimate and comfortable\, with full tracking and mixing capabilities. He continues to provide live sound services (FOH/monitor)\, consulting on studio design\, acoustics and live sound system installations.

DESCRIPTION:The Solid State Logic Broadcast truck will be open for tours at Cogswell College Wednesday Feb 10\, 2016. \nThe tour will bring small groups through for a demo and brief discussion\, between 6:00 and 9:00 pm. San Francisco Audio Engineering Society Members are invited to drop by for a tour. You’ll find the truck in the parking lot at Cogswell College’s new San Jose campus. \nThe SSL Broadcast Equipment Demonstration Vehicle is a custom designed mobile unit which replicates a fully operational on-air audio production suite. The vehicle is equipped with the SSL C10 HD compact digital audio console\, a MORSE Router and SSL’s Broadcast I/O. The vehicle is also equipped with a Miranda multi-viewer\, Genelec 5.1 audio monitoring\, RTS Comms\, Savant environmental control and an array of related on-air production equipment. The truck fully integrates and demonstrates all of these systems.
