Sixty Five Years of Stereo Optical provides an overview of stereo motion picture soundtracks
which are printed directly on the film along with the picture. Starting with Alan Blumlein in the
1930s, and moving through various stereo optical techniques including Perspecta Sound and
Walt Disney's Fantasound, up to today's digital technology. Most of the landmark stereo
optical soundtrack formats are discussed and several are demonstrated with film clips. The
program has been presented internationally to film festivals, university film classes, and
technical societies of the motion picture and professional audio industries.
The program will be given in Dolby Laboratories' Presentation Studio which is a theatre,
projection room and recording studio complex within the old brick south-of-Market
warehouse building which is Dolby's headquarters. It was built to provide a nearly-perfect
listening and viewing environment for film, recorded sound, and live presentations, while
being acoustically isolated from the workspaces adjacent to it. In a discussion of theatre
design criteria, you will hear and see the many differences between a normal commercial
cinema and the Presentation Studio.
Ioan Allen, Vice President of Dolby Laboratories will present the program. He joined Dolby
Laboratories in 1969. He is a Fellow of the SMPTE, AES and BKSTS and is active in U.S.
and world standards organizations. He received Scientific and Engineering Awards from the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1979 and 1987, and an Oscar in 1989. He
was the 1985 recipient of the Samuel L. Warner Award for contributions to motion picture
sound. Mr. Allen is also an Adjunct Professor at The University of Southern California School
of Cinema-Television.
