August Meeting Notice

August 2005 Meeting Notice

 Subject:Single-Point Stereo and Surround
Microphone Techniques
 Speakers:David Josephson
Place: Plantronics, 345 Encinal Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060
Time and Date: August 18th, 7:30 PM (refreshments at 7:00 PM)

David Josephson of Santa Cruz microphone maker Josephson Engineering, Inc. will present a discussion of intensity stereo and surround microphone techniques including X-Y, M-S, Ambisonics and related
systems. Coincident stereo pickups such as these, using only intensity cues for localization rather than the time cues included in semi-coincident or spaced recordings, offer a powerful tool for creating
precise imaging of sound sources within a natural soundscape. Performance compromises caused by tradeoffs in microphone requirements for the individual elements of these techniques will be explored. The
presentation will focus on a steerable, adjustable pattern technique realized using a single omni and two figure-8 microphones. Any coincident stereo or surround pickup can be accomplished with this
technique. The Josephson C700S microphone uses this technique, and it may be realized with a similar array of other types as well.

David Josephson studied electrical engineering at UC Berkeley, and founded the microphone manufacturer Josephson Engineering in 1988. He holds three patents in directional microphone design and has given
several papers at AES section meetings and conventions. He has served the AES San Francisco section as Vice Chairman and committee member, has chaired sessions and workshops at AES conventions. He organized and is now chair of the AES Standards Committee working group on microphone characterization, and the AES Technical Council advisory group on regulations, and is vice chair of the Technical Council committee on microphones and applications.
