Natural soundscapes have had a major influence on human culture since
the dawn of time. These biophonies furnished not only the roots of
human language, but the foundation of music long before we began to
worship the pictographs and petroglyphs that decorated the stone
outcroppings and cave walls of our ancient world. Animals in our
deserts and forest environments were the first to teach us to dance
and sing as we mimicked and shadowed their elegant movements and
voices. The biophony, properly understood by ancients, also conveys
detailed information about the critter life in various habitats. The
sounds of the natural world have only been remotely explored and
remain an untapped library of information for both scientists and
sound artists. This presentation will offer new perspectives on these
human and Other connections and a discussion of issues related to
field recording.
Dr. Bernie Krause, bioacoustician, author and lecturer, records
sounds of the natural world. More than 35% of the soundscapes Krause
recorded in North America since 1968 are from radically altered
habitats where the natural soundscape no longer exists. His natural
sound archive, the largest of its kind in private hands, contains
some of the rarest of these biophonies. His new book/CD: Wild
Soundscapes: Discovering the Voice of the Natural World (Wilderness
Press, 2002) provides insights into the power of natural sound in the
lives of all living organisms. His work can be heard on over 55 CDs,
and public space installations throughout the U. S. Krause lives in
Glen Ellen with his wife, Katherine, two cats, YoYo Meow, and
Eddie-puss-Rex, and his two fish, Ella Fishgerald and Tommy Dorsal.
