The AES San Francisco ChapterÕs March meeting was held at Singer Studio V7 and Singer Productions in San Francisco. Over fifty Bay area professionals attended the meeting. Emmy Award winning composer/producer/performer Scott Singer provided a tour of the recently remodeled facility. This includes the worldÕs first Bentley Edition Recording suite that features a custom ÒGP4T from John Oram as well as an extensive collection of high-end out-board components from Neve, Universal Audio, RCA and GML. Custom Ed Long EML speakers coupled with custom EML Elf crossover and 18Ó Sub-Woofers below the mixing desk provide the surround monitoring. Forty-eight channels of multi-track record are provided by the ubiquitous Pro-Tools. This solution illustrates the ÒTechno-RetroÓ bridge of ÒOld SchoolÓ analog with modern digital sound production. The facilityÕs construction, layout and equipment provide creativity and work flow ease for todayÕs fast-paced music, film, and television production.
Scott then discussed many of the issues between creativity and tools. One of the interesting examples brought to the audiences attention was the auditory discrepancy between an actual piece of vintage analog gear and the associated Digital Audio Workstation Òplug-inÓ that models it. Mr. Singer saved the best for last by actual showing the attendees actual scoring to picture and mixing a music track. This truly showcased to capabilities of the remodeled facility and was enthusiastically received by the attendees.
