Description:

The presentation will cover a wide range of topics about Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound, from theater design and certification to mixing and foley. Roger Wiersema, president and chief engineer at Polarity Post, will discuss the design and installation of the 7.1 and 5.1 Surround Sound Dolby Certified Mix Theater upgrade to Polarity's Studio 3. Dan Sperry, Senior Staff Engineer at Dolby Laboratories, will talk about the requirements and certification process for a Dolby approved venue, including room tuning and calibration. Dave Nelson, founder of the Outpost Film Center, will give a demo of the new surround mix stage at Polarity Post, and discuss recent projects and the new foley stage.

About the Facility:

Polarity Post Production is a 5-studio, full service, audio post house providing a world class space for sound design and mixing. In 2003 Polarity opened its doors as former Annex Chief Technician, Roger Wiersema, and Senior Engineer, Patrick Fitzgerald, took over as owners and proprietors. Three seasons of the Disney Channel’s Higgley Town Heroes, the ongoing ad campaign of Chevron’s Talking Cars, as well as original VO recording for EA's The Sims are just a few amongst a myriad of other projects that have met their completion at Polarity.

About the speakers:

Roger Wiersema is president, chief engineer, and co-owner of Polarity Post. His background includes over 30-years of involvement with music, sound and post-production. In 1978 Roger joined Music Annex as Chief Engineer and for the next 25 years designed and built recording studios, post-production studios and a duplication plant for Music Annex. In 2003, he co-founded Polarity Post Production Inc. and took over the Music Annex building in San Francisco, now home to five full-service rooms, including Studio 3, now upgraded to a certified Dolby 7.1 Surround mix stage.
 
Dan Sperry is a Senior Staff Engineer at Dolby Laboratories, where he has been for over 20 years. During that time he has served as a surround consultant for feature films such as Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, The Virgin Suicides, Clerks 2, and Capitalism: A Love Story.
 
Dave Nelson’s career spans over twenty years in the film/sound and recording industry. Dave led the creation and construction of Poolside Studios in 1985, where he developed an experimental and improvisational sound design style gained a reputation as a fun and professional engineer. In 1996, Dave embarked upon an ambitious partnership to create Outpost Film Center, taking on projects such as Lost in Translation, the Academy Award nominated "When Abortion was Legal", as well as sound effects and mixing for "Dream with the Fishes" and "Cherish" by Finn Taylor.
