Audio Engineering Society San Francisco Candidates 2016

Candidates:
Chair David Bowles |
David Bowles, also known as “Golden Ears”, is a classical and acoustic music recording engineer and producer. He has recorded all styles of music ranging from today’s composers all the way back to the Medieval age. His recordings have won awards and acclamation for their vivid sound and committed performances. Also known for high resolution recordings in surround+height, he has taught at the New York University Tonmeister programme for several years and participated in AES panels on immersive sound technology and application. Other institutions Mr. Bowles has taught at include Indiana University, Peabody Conservatory, the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Banff Centre. He is a member of the AES, SPARS and the NARAS Producers and Engineers Wing. |
Vice Chair Christopher Scott Cooper |
If it involves sound, Chris has probably done it. A lifelong musician with over 30 years as an audio engineer/producer. Currently teaching live sound and studio production at Cogswell Technical College. His education in music composition, years of touring and performing, many hours sitting behind the desk both in studio and out on the road has provided a wealth of experience to pull from. In addition to Christopher’s live sound and recording work, he’s done audio for games, toys, tv and film, systems installs, and is known for his trouble shooting abilities. Twelve years ago Christopher built Blue Seven Audio, a high end professional recording studio tucked into a modest space that is both intimate and comfortable, with full tracking and mixing capabilities. He continues to provide live sound services (FOH/monitor), consulting on studio design, acoustics and live sound system installations. |
Secretary Priya Shekar |
Priyanka Shekar is a music technologist, product consultant and entrepreneur building the new digital renaissance. She currently serves as Program Director at Real Industry, a non-profit transforming how students enter the media tech industry through experiential education, teaching at top-ranking universities including Stanford, UC Berkeley and University of Michigan. Priyanka has founded startups in mobile music technology through Stanford University’s leading StartX and Graduate School of Business venture incubators. She has consulted for Shazam and Lincoln Motor Co. Priyanka studied on a Stanford Arts Institute Fellowship at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), the premier institute for music technology. She is passionate about helping young people design their careers, STEAM education, and is involved with the Stanford Alumni Mentor and Y Combinator’s Female Founders networks. |
Treasurer Brian Gibbs |
Graduate from Berklee College of Music (major in Jazz Composition). Active member of Berklee Alumni Association, NARAS Voting Member. Assistant Engineer on 58th Annual GRAMMY Award winning album “Realidades – Deluxe Addition” by Los Tigres Del Norte for Best Regional Mexican Music Album. Audio GANG member since 2012. Co-founder of Tool Shed Studios since 2009 in Morgan Hill, CA. Actively performing in multiple Bay Area bands. CFO & Treasurer for The Lighthouse Media Group, LLC, (a film, tv, recording & post-production group in Silicon Valley) Various live sound (FOH & Monitor Mix) at multiple venues across the Greater Bay Area Also a deep corporate background in finance, banking, wealth management & residential/commercial lending. |
Member at Large positions usually run two years. Because the section did not have elections in 2015, some of the 2016 candidates are running for one year, to restore the normal rotation.
Member at Large (one year) Jessica Thompson |
Grammy-nominated mastering and restoration engineer and archiving specialist Jessica Thompson has digitized, restored and revived historic recordings from the Bottom Line, Caffe Lena, Erroll Garner and Woody Guthrie Archives and the Newport Jazz and Folk Festival, including performances by Pete Seeger, Roger McGuinn, Dave Von Ronk, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Doc Watson, Miles Davis and Jean Ritchie. Her remaster of Erroll Garner’s iconic recording The Complete Concert By The Sea (Sony/Legacy) was nominated for the Best Historical Album Grammy, 2016. She has cleaned, digitized and restored rare vinyl and cassette recordings for Awesome Tapes From Africa and many Numero Group complications. (She wrote about restoring Ata Kak’s cassette Obaa Sima for Pink Noise.) In her previous career as a radio producer, she interviewed drummer Max Roach and the organ player at Fenway Park for WGBH. She has spun records and CDs on the airwaves of WGBH, WFMU, WZBC and WESU. |

System Integrator with a Bachelor’s degree of Applied Science in Sound Arts. Strong audio engineering background demonstrated by proficiency for digital and analog signal flow. Classically trained, multi-genre musician, skillful in performance and composition. Utilizes creative solutions to generate a focused workflow while working independently and within team environments. |
Member at Large (two year) Nahuel Bronzini |
Nahuel Bronzini is an Argentine guitarist and composer currently based in San Francisco. After completing his degree in jazz at the Escuela de Música Contemporánea in Buenos Aires, he started his musical journey mixing jazz and folk influences into his own vocabulary. Despite Bronzini’s love for popular music, his urge to keep widening his music experiences made him move to San Francisco in 2010, to continue his studies in classical guitar at the San Francisco Conservatory. |
Member at Large (one year) Patrick Flanagan |
As a Field Applications Engineer, Patrick provides technical information and expertise to ensure that partners understand THX technology requirements and assists them in the product development life cycle. His professional background in all things audio lets him configure products from AV receivers and home theater preamplifiers to loudspeakers and personal mobile devices. Patrick is a research-focused engineer specializing in audio technology. Most recently, he co-authored a brand new headphone specification program for THX consumer electronics certification. He is also the lead researcher on spatial (3D) audio, specifically as it relates to headphone playback, ¬¬focusing on audio algorithms and processing for 3D audio as well as performance metrics for headphone amplifiers. Previously, Patrick was a Field Applications Engineer at Turtle Beach, where he facilitated the installation and technical implementation of their audio products and collateral. He was also the owner and Chief Designer of Zazen Audio, a company that designed products for customers with requirements of both analog and digital nature. With extensive research and acoustic testing, Patrick took product visions from pilot production to final assembly. Patrick has always been interested in knowing how things work with a particular passion for acoustics and amplifier technology. He has been a member of the Audio Engineering Society since 2004, and he holds a patent for an Improved Wireless Audio System as the lead designer for the development of this product. In his free time, Patrick enjoys surfing and spending time with his family. |
Member at Large (two year) Jessica Livingston |
Diverse audio industry background, spanning radio, pro audio manufacturing and multimedia. Award winning editor and writer with a BA in Media Management from CSU, Northridge, and continued studies in technical communications at UC Berkeley. Ten years in varied roles on the AES San Francisco committee, most recently as Chair, creating dozens of local meetings, lectures and events for Bay Area audio engineers. Four years of chairing the technical tours for the AES conventions in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Currently balancing a freelance media career with burgeoning sound design artistry and audio post production. |
Member at Large (two year) Piper Payne |
Piper Payne is a Mastering Engineer at Coast Mastering in Berkeley. Piper is President of the SF Chapter of the Recording Academy, co-chairs the SF Producers and Engineers Wing and serves on the Education Committee. In addition she is an active member of AES and the Women’s Audio Mission, as well as being the CEO of Giving Stage. Piper is an audio educator and lectures often about mastering and recording. She is also a first-call for large venue concert and classical recordings. Piper began her career with a BFA in Audio from the University of Michigan, continuing her Graduate education in Audio at the University of Stavanger in Norway. Piper has apprenticed under some of the best Mastering and audio mentors in the world, including Bob Katz in Orlando and Michael Romanowski in San Francisco. Piper moved to San Francisco after working at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada as the Senior Audio Associate in a work-study program that had her climbing glaciers for film sound design and recording jazz orchestras in the same day! Piper’s focus is mastering, and she lives for quality and equality in audio. |
Member at Large (two year) Valerie Tyler |
Valerie Tyler has been an AES member since 1992. She served as a Governor from 2012-14, and has served on eleven convention committees in positions including Convention Co-Chair, Workshops Co-Chair, Special Events Co-Chair and Tutorials & Master Classes Co-Chair. She has also served in the San Francisco and San Francisco State sections of the AES. Valerie studied music at UC Santa Cruz, the music/recording industry at San Francisco State University, and electronic music, digital audio, digital video, web design, and graphic design at College of San Mateo. She currently holds the position of Webmaster at College of San Mateo. She previously worked as an audio editor and live sound engineer. |
